SoBaD through the years!

SoBaD Lab has been a fixture at the University of Virginia since Ben started teaching at the University in 2010. Many people have been a part of the team over the years, and have shaped SoBaD into what it is today. You can read more about our current and former lab members below.

2020

Happy New Year from the SoBaD team! Our Lab rang in 2020 with Ben and his wife, Sophie to celebrate many upcoming accomplishments and events, including Andrew (Andy) Hales' transition to Ole Miss and the upcoming Ph.D. recruitment season. We will miss you, Andy! We also welcomed some new Research Assistants to the lab.

In February, members of our team attended the SPSP Conference in New Orleans and presented new research on social ostracism and appearance change. Congrats to our travel award recipients, Yuching and Annalisa!

2019

The start of the 2019 school year brought new members to the research team, including two graduate students, Shelly and Jacob, and a new Lab Manager, Annalisa. Annalisa joins the lab after completing a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

We are all excited to see what the new year will bring.

2018

The start of the 2018 school year brought many new research assistants and a new post-doc, Christopher Neale. Chris joins the lab in collaboration with an Environmental Research Institute Co-Lab, which has members from faculty across departments at the University. The purpose of this Co-Lab is to study a variety of aspects surrounding climate change, including the ways that people think about and understand climate change work and prevention.

Julia Holland, the former lab manager, departed for graduate school in August 2019, though she remains part-time in an advisory capacity for the fall semester while Annalisa takes up the reins.

Enjoying the mountains!
Enjoying the mountains!

The start of the academic year began with a new lab manager, a new post-doc fellow, and a number of new research assistants. Graduate students David Reinhard and Lindsay Juarez embarked on their final year of graduate school and the beginning of their dissertations. In April of 2017, both successfully defended their dissertations and received their Doctorates.

In between designing studies, recruiting participants, and collecting and analyzing data, the lab managed to find time for a few fun events, including an autumn afternoon on top of Carter's Mountain.

2017 alumni: David Reinhard & Lindsay Juarez (graduate students), Ines Jurcevic (post-doctoral fellow), Ilana Brody (Distinguished Majors Project), Josh Wallace, Aubrey Nguyen, Austin Boyd, Sheena Wilson, Brian Li, Sarah McDonald, Erin Wynd, Amanda Yi, Elin Woolf, Madison Maire, Zach Cummings, and Laura Baird.
